I’ve noticed that winter is a good time to buy kit. They’re made of Kangaroo leather (sorry Skippy) and would normally cost around £500 but I got them in the Sale for just under £200.Bargain!<br />On hearing I'd bought a bike, my poor Mum freaked out. She thought I'd pass my test and that would be it -just another category on my licence. (In fairness, I'd thought that at the start too)<br /> She's worried I'll hurt myself, bless her. After buying my back protector, I phoned to reassure her I now had something that would make her feel better about me riding a bike. "What? Another two wheels?!" she replied.<br />She does have a point. <br />Although my bike has more power than I will ever use, nothing but my fear and bank balance would have stopped me from going out and buying something capable of much, much more the minute I passed my test.And VERY, VERY fast bikes are much cheaper than very, very fast cars.<br />After the car test the Driving Standards Agency has the Pass Plus course. A minimum 6 hour course for new drivers that looks at town driving, rural roads, all weather driving, dual carriageways and motorways and night driving. Completion can lead to substantial insurance discounts for newly qualified drivers.<br />There's nothing comparable for bikes.<br />I can just go out on my bike and wring its neck until I hit something or lose it on a bend. I am already planning to take advanced tuition, but most advanced riding associations would like you to have at least 6 months experience. What do I do in the meantime?<br />I speak to Ros at Ipswich Rider Training and ask what they have to offer. I book a half-day session with Police Class 1 rider Kevin Stark. I’d asked lots of advice on what would be suitable and what wouldn’t. I knew I wanted a bike that would suit me for years rather than months as the bike would be a luxury and not something I’d want to replace any time soon. I couldn’t afford anything new, which I decided was a good thing in case I dropped or scratched it and I wanted it to be capable of all types of riding.<br />I seemed to be attracted to the more sporty looking bikes, but having sat on a few I soon realise I’m not overly keen on the bent over, bum up riding position.<br />And then there’s the small budget. I started to wonder if I would actually find a bike that ticked all the boxes.<br />Then I found Unit 1 at Wickham Market’s website. They had a ZZR 600 for sale. It looked nice, I liked the style and colour.<br />Within an hour of my test I was sat on the bike to see if I liked the riding position. All boxes ticked so far. John gave it a quick test ride and everything seemed fine. The only negative was that it was slightly over budget. Luckily, Gavin Smith is really approachable and keen to help so we reached a deal. I agree to collect the bike the following week and then head home to prepare for the new arrival. I arrange my insurance, buy some disc and chain locks and a wall anchor… and have to knock down my front wall to make room for it! Still grey and miserable, but the wind has definitely dropped.<br />As soon as I realise the test will go ahead, the nerves kick in.<br />By the time I’m on my bike heading up to the test centre, my mouth is dry and I can feel my heart beating hard.<br />The examiner introduces himself, explains the test and we head outside.<br />First the eyesight check, then the safety questions, then we’re off.<br />We head out towards the A14. As I ride up the slip road I check to the right and see a lorry on the main carriageway. I start to accelerate; sure I’ll be able to join before the lorry reaches me. Almost as soon as I do, the hill and the head wind make me think otherwise and I decide to slow and join behind the lorry. Bit messy. Well, that’s it then I decide. Failed.<br />It’s a good job it’s not two –way radio. I think the examiner would’ve thought I had Tourettes!<br />I decide I may as well just carry on the best I can and learn from the experience.<br />The rest of the ride goes well; even the U-turn I had worried about so much went without a hitch.<br />Back at the test centre the examiner asks another question on carrying a pillion, then after what seems like an eternity tells me I’ve passed! <br />He gave me a driving fault for the messy slip road incident, and another two driving faults for hesitancy at junctions (I agree, I was maybe trying too hard to make sure I didn’t slow another vehicle down when I emerged) but that was it!<br />The relief and excitement were enormous. Now I’ve just got to compose myself enough to ride back to Ipswich rider training. The weather has turned again. Very high winds and showers. Surely I can’t have my test cancelled again? Andy says that if it weren’t test day tomorrow he wouldn’t have taken me out today. I soon see why. It’s not too bad once I get going (except for sidewinds on more open roads), but sitting stationary at traffic lights and junctions it’s taking both feet down and all my strength to stay upright. We pull over to attempt a U-turn and end up getting off our bikes and waiting 5 minutes while the weather gets really interesting. Apparently I can have a test tomorrow morning. Urm, no thanks, I said soon - not immediately.<br />I take a 08.40 test for the end of next week. Now, I’ve just got to hope the weather doesn’t take a nasty turn..and I can remember how to ride!<br />I book two more lessons before my Test. I’m feeling a bit like the momentum has gone and my enthusiasm has waned. <br />I shouldn’t have worried. It was a bit like catching up with an old friend. You’re not sure you can be bothered, but once you’ve made the effort, you’re glad you did.<br />The U-turns were still offensive! Another close encounter with the tarmac, having not sat up enough and lost my balance! This time not as dramatic; not quite as embarrassing, but still frustrating.<br />I’m now resigned to the fact that I could do a hundred U-turns, and even if 99 were great, and just one went wrong, that one would be all I’d think about. All I can do is hope for the best. Test day. The last few days have been awful. A freezing fog has just hung around endlessly, making everything and everyone feel cold and miserable. Today is no different. My nerves wake me up early, so I’m reading through the ‘Show me/Tell me’ Questions the examiner asks before we go out riding.<br />Apparently the Tests all went out yesterday, so I’m hoping mine will go ahead. As anxious as I am, I just want to get it done.<br />The ice on my car is pretty thick, and I’m beginning to wonder what it will be like to ride a bike in this sort of weather.<br />As I arrive at Ipswich Rider Training, Ros tells me the first two tests have been cancelled and mine is in doubt.<br />I can’t decide if I’m relieved or bitterly disappointed. Rob returns with the last candidate who was turned away, and we get ready to head up to the Test centre.<br />On the ride there, the fog gives way to low wintry sun, getting my hopes up, only to be dashed again as we approach the Test Centre which is still cloaked in fog. The ice seems to have melted off the main roads, and the ride hasn’t felt scary or unsafe. Any misgivings I had have disappeared. I’m up for it. The practice U-turn and Emergency stop went fine and I feel I’m ready to give it my best shot.<br />As we stand in the waiting room, an Examiner comes out to tell a poor Learner driver her test won’t be going ahead due to the weather.<br />My heart sinks. If a car can’t go out, there’s no way we will. Sure enough, our Examiner comes out and gives us the bad news and a letter from the DSA explaining what happens next. Apparently, I now wait to be contacted with a new Test date.<br />It's very disappointing, but there's not much I can do about it.<br /><br />The ride back felt strange. All that nervous energy un-used. Now it’s just a case of putting everything on hold until a Test date comes through. I’m guessing it’s probably that fact that made everything feel very wrong. My backside seemed to be continually slipping on the seat; my hands couldn’t get comfortable on the clutch or the throttle, making gear changes and acceleration horribly jerky. My feet couldn’t get comfortable on the pegs. My shoulders ached. My visor kept misting up.<br />I felt completely ill at ease and clumsy. On the up side, the U-turns, for the most went part ok!<br />Two months ago I had never sat on a bike, and never had any urge to. Now I’m a few days away from taking my test, and I’ve surprised myself by how much this means to me. It’s not just about the fear of failure; it’s about wanting the licence, wanting a bike. From my initial indifference, to slight interest,<br />to looking forward to the next lesson, just to be on a bike again.<br />I find myself scouring the Internet for suitable bikes, determined to have one the minute I pass my Test. All that stands in my way is about 35 minutes of being assessed by an Examiner. Every aspect of riding is a new skill to me and nothing is anywhere near to perfect, but I seem to have made U-turns this huge obstacle in my mind that’s so difficult to overcome.<br />Today I’m out with Andy again. Same old thing, some are ok, some aren’t. I’m even less consistent than when he last saw me as that was before my bike dropping, confidence-crushing incident.<br />Andy tries a new approach. I sit pillion while he does several U-turns.<br />It feels a bit faster than my attempts. He swings quicker to the left and harder to the right than I’m managing, and amazingly to me, the bike feels totally stable.<br />Now it’s my turn. Setting the clutch, checking over my shoulder, off we go. As the bike moves I resist the urge to pull the clutch back in and lose all the momentum, I swing it a bit to the left, a bit quicker to the right and look at where I want to finish. I made it!<br />We continue the lesson with a bit of riding then a U-turn. A bit more riding, then another U-turn. Today was no different. Despite the mishap last time, the big bruise on my leg, and the even bigger dent to my confidence, I was still keen to get back on the bike.<br />I knew we’d have to do more U-turns at some point and that wasn’t something I was looking forward to, but I knew it had to be done.<br />The general ride seemed fine, still the odd wobbles and jerks but each lesson I feel a little more comfortable. I’m feel very aware that I’m not looking as far ahead as I would in a car and that worries me as I know I’m even more vulnerable on a bike. But, the less I’m thinking about how to control the bike, the further ahead I’m looking, so hopefully that will keep improving with experience.<br />Then U-turns. Back to wobbling and tap dancing. Not what I need when I only have one more lesson before my test! Poor Rob wasn’t sure what to do with me! It’s easier to sort out a problem with technique rather than a psychological one. I keep thinking if only I’d dropped it at the start of my training, but to do it just when I thought I’d finally figured U-turns out has set me back a long way. By the end of the lesson, it had improved slightly, fear replaced by determination. To try and get back on track I’ve squeezed in another lesson this week hopefully to get some consistency. The reassuring thing was getting back to the training centre to hear another two learners also discussing the evilness of U-turns. It’s nice to know it’s not just me. Worrying about messing up U-turns, worrying about doing 70mph on a dual carriageway in the wind and rain, worrying about sliding across a roundabout, worrying about anything and everything bike related. I was extra careful to avoid drain covers and white lines, and I was definitely more cautious, maybe overly so on the faster roads. I now realise that drain covers are almost always somewhere really inconvenient for bikers. I’m guessing the people who put them there don’t ride bikes (Maybe they should).<br />Not a good day to worry as it was my Mock Test. The real thing is approaching much faster than I anticipated so today we’ll see if it’s asking too much.<br />We had a ride out to a nice wide road for a U-turn or two. First one went fine, second one went fine. Thinking I may have the hang of this now, we moved onto a slightly narrower road. I didn’t feel overly concerned, but as soon as I started to move I felt the clutch wasn’t right.<br />I pulled the clutch in, the bike slowed and lost momentum as I started the turn. The bike now slowing to a stop, turned to the right, my weight tipping further to the right until..CRASH! I’d dropped it.<br />There I was - a helpless little splat in the middle of the road! I think the embarrassment had me up quicker than I went down! Rob helped me pick the poor bike up, and then we tried a couple more, but oh no- we’re back to wobbling and tap dancing our way round again. All that progress gone in a split second.<br />Trying to put it behind us, we rode up to the Test Centre for the Mock Test.<br />No feedback, no guidance- for the next half-hour it’s just me. The ride went ok. The walk round and U-turn went ok (surprisingly). The Emergency Stop was fine (except on my trip round the block, I ended up in a cul-de-sac!) Even the dual carriageway was ok. 70mph still seems more like 170mph to me at the moment and I feel incredibly vulnerable, but I did it.<br />At the end Rob said there were a couple of times I could’ve built up speed quicker, and a couple of roundabouts that were a bit slow (that fear of sliding), but overall would’ve been good enough to pass a test.<br />I should’ve been pleased, but all I can think about is how much I need to improve and how close the test is getting. Now I just need to get my riding up to scratch and pass the test (And save up a couple of thousand pounds!)<br />I’ve most definitely been bitten by the bug and the thought of passing my test and not riding makes it all seem a bit pointless.<br />Today, I’ve spent most of my lesson on U-turns and made a small breakthrough.<br />My instructor was Andy, who seems to be a bit of a U-turn specialist. He made me realise that I can’t ride the way I drive. Although the road experience is useful, when it comes to stability, momentum and balance, cars and bikes are completely different machines.<br />I’ve learnt with U-turns it’s all about getting the clutch (forget the throttle) in the right place and picking your spot (most definitely NOT the kerb opposite).<br />I’m not saying I’m perfect and all my worries are over, but I feel I’ve got a system to work with. Before if I made it round I would be relieved, a little amazed, and have absolutely no idea how I got there. Now I understand where I need to aim for and have a bit more faith in the bike and my own ability.<br />The rest of the ride is coming together as well. So much so, I’ve got a test date booked. Rob tells me I take less time to get into the lessons now, the wobbles are getting a little fewer and further between, gears are no longer scary. Suddenly, from having no interest in bikes whatsoever, I’m now determined to pass my test and have my own bike.<br />It’s mainly the U-turns that frustrate me.Actually,it's ONLY the U-turns that frustrate me!<br /> Today we started on the ‘widest test road’.<br />First U-turn went well. Maybe it was the shock of getting it right that accounted for me messing up the next few! If I wasn’t tap dancing my way across, I wasn’t steering enough or not balancing the throttle and clutch properly.<br />After a couple of slight improvements we rode to a narrower road, with a camber.<br />Rob assures me that I’m not alone in my dislike of U-turns and that I’m not the worst student either, but it really feels like it! The scary thought of mounting pavements; sending pedestrians scattering; ending up in someone’s garden.<br />I’ve decided as well as avoiding dual-carriageways, I’m probably going to get off and push my bike round should the need arise after test!<br />On our ride round I had a lady look me straight in the eye and then walk out in front of me, which didn’t faze me one bit, but give me an empty road and an instruction to do a U-turn and I can feel a panic coming on.<br />We started off on a nice wide road. After a few attempts, which weren’t entirely hideous, we found a narrower road.<br />Rob told me this was the widest road they use for test, so I’m not looking forward to seeing the narrowest.<br />A couple of reasonable U-turns, then a couple of wobbly, foot-down mess-ups. I had to finish on a good one. I refused to let them get the better of me. When I don’t look at the kerb opposite, sit up straight, and basically don’t panic, they’re improving. Despite the L-plates and orange vest, I somehow feel a bit more confident, a little less novice, a bit more credible.<br />The lesson started with a little more familiarisation with the new bike, a couple of Emergency stops which went well, some hill starts, which again went well…and then the scary bit. Dual carriageway.<br />We’d done a little bit before, but not really any distance and not up to speed.<br />Rob showed me the new test centre; and we talked about the types of road I’d encounter on test.<br />The location of the test centre makes dual carriageway extremely accessible in the half hour-ish long test.<br />Rob talked about the importance of making progress wherever possible. He said the examiner would expect 70mph if it were safe and overtaking if it was appropriate.<br />He advised I rode at a speed I felt comfortable with today, and off we went.<br />Coming onto the A14, starting to build up speed, I decided that there was no point in delaying the inevitable. If it was safe to do 70mph, I may as well do it and get used to it.<br />I moved out into the right hand lane and started to overtake a line of lorries. Not only did I have the head wind which felt like hundreds of mini jabs, tapping my head back, I now was aware of the pressure around the lorries. My arms and legs ached from gripping the bike so tight!<br />When we eventually stopped and I mentioned getting blown about to Rob, he said he hadn’t noticed much wind! What to me, felt like a force 10 gale trying to prise me off the bike, was nothing out of the ordinary to someone who rides a bike regularly. It didn’t help that my bike had no fairing, which left me more open to the elements.<br />It was good experience, but I don’t feel that dual carriageway riding is going to be the best bit about riding a bike.Michelle Hhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06153364295501250422noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36007739.post-46114523423440735452006-12-19T07:53:00.000-08:002006-12-19T07:55:41.377-08:00Bigger and Better?The plan was for me to ride the 125 down to the off-road site and for Rob to follow on the 500.<br />If all went well there, we’d swap and I’d take the 500 on to the road.<br />I’m not sure if it was just apprehension at the thought of riding the 500, but I suddenly felt <em>very </em>comfortable on the125!<br />Several people have told me it’s easier to ride a bigger bike, but to me bigger means faster, heavier and therefore much more scary!<br />The first thing I noticed was the sound of the engine; I could hear the additional power.<br />The controls all felt slightly different of course, and I was aware of the extra weight.<br />I rode around the site for a while, changing up and down gears, braking, and attempting a couple of U-turns.<br />Then it was out on the road. The clutch felt easier, the gears a bit more definite, the throttle more responsive. Maybe not quite as scary as I’d expected. I was aware of not putting too much front brake on when the bars are turned. It’s going to be impossible for me to pick it up off the floor if I drop it.<br />I did feel a bit tense, but we covered lots of different roads and speed limit changes and even ended up back on the A14 for one junction, so there was plenty of time to adjust. No close encounters with lampposts or kerbs, which was nice!<br />I even got to go on the A14, which was ever so slightly scary, but good fun. The 125cc managed about 60mph, but it felt much faster on a bike than in a car.<br />Rob was doing his best to re- build my confidence and I started to feel a tiny bit more in control. Of course there were still plenty of mistakes, but when they did happen, I did my best not to panic. I even had a go at a couple of U-turns, which weren’t great, but not total disasters either.<br />Then we worked on junctions a bit more- getting the right sequence on approach and dealing with them safely and (hopefully) under control. Parts of the lesson were actually a little more enjoyable and a little less white knuckle! I still find my mistakes frustrating, but I can at last see a little progress. I booked an hour with (another) Rob and felt reasonably confident as the CBT had gone so well.<br />It was a different bike, but still a 125cc and I felt sure it wouldn't be a problem.<br />I should probably mention at this point I’m not very patient with myself when I get things wrong! I stupidly believed that I should now be in full control of this machine (after 5 hours?!) and when it became clear that I wasn’t, I felt deflated.<br />It all started when I tried to turn right out of a junction, let the clutch out a bit quick, made the silly mistake of looking at the kerb and lamp post opposite, and started heading towards them! I managed to get round (just about), but it dented my confidence big time and got me thinking (maybe a bit too much).<br />The stalling,wobbling and general jerkiness. I felt like I was the worst biker ever!<br />Obviously it’s a completely new skill and it’s going to take time.<br />But that didn’t stop me getting so completely frustrated and annoyed at myself that I couldn’t wait for the lesson to end. It felt like a very long hour, and it seemed nothing had gone right.<br />I had a chat with Ros and of course she made complete sense and encouraged me to think about the things I had achieved. Three weeks ago I didn’t know how to start a bike, or select a gear, or even tell you where the clutch was.<br />I’m just so used to being in control of a car; it seems ridiculous that I can’t feel the same level of control on a bike. The difference is I’ve driven a car for 18 years and ridden a bike for a few hours.<br />Still, I’m not giving up that easily; I’ve booked two 2 hour lessons for next week. It was his 16th Birthday and the CBT was part of his present.<br />I did feel very old and very envious of his automatic scooter. Our instructor was called Rob and the day kicked off with a chat about the importance of having the right kit.<br />We then went down to the sugar beet factory and practised getting the bikes moving, figures of 8, U-turns and some junction procedures. I felt very wobbly on the slow manoeuvres, but not too bad overall.<br />After lunch we had a session on the Highway Code, and then we were out on the road.<br />First Rob was in front, then we swapped round. I couldn’t decide if I was terrified, excited or both. I think it was actually about 80% sheer terror and 20% excitement!<br /> The thing that struck me was how vulnerable you are on a bike. I felt like I should be visible to everyone. After all, I felt very aware of my surroundings - much more than I am in a car. The sounds, the smells - everything seems closer and more real. And yet the scary thing is, because you are small and probably not perceived as a threat to someone in a car, you get the feeling you are almost insignificant to most drivers.<br />We got back to the centre at 4pm and were de-briefed and handed our CBT certificates. There’s not exactly a rush to take the Theory test, but I just wanted to get it out of the way, and I’m hoping that I can pass my practical test before the theory certificate expires in 2 years!<br />I’d practised with my theory test DVD and felt reasonably confident. It’s more the practical aspect I’m concerned about!<br />Having passed the Theory test I set off for my lesson. I felt really nervous and a bit sorry for my instructor, Charlie. Poor bloke will need the patience of a Saint!<br />He loaded up the van with the bike and we set off for the old sugar beet factory near Sproughton.<br />He patiently explained the controls and despite the fact the idea of riding the bike seemed damned near impossible, I managed it (sort of)!<br /> I even got up to 3rd gear, with a lot of encouragement from Charlie and finished the session feeling excited and keen to take the next step. Then there’s the choice between leather or synthetic..or a bit of both. <br />Then there’s the double stitching; treble stitching; protective pads; removable linings etc, etc.<br /> And, I haven’t even started on boots, gloves or helmets yet!<br />I went to see Ian at MaxMoto with an idea I might prefer leathers (just because they looked good!)<br />I was there for an hour and a half. Not only did I get to try on various kit, Ian also got me to sit on a bike in the kit to see if it still fitted and the protection was in the right places.<br />In the end, I opted for waterproof textile jacket and trousers. I chose this because it was good value for money, comfortable- the jacket and trousers can be zipped together. And, it offered adequate protection for the type of riding I’ll be doing in the type of weather I’ll be doing it. My only slight concern was that the jacket and trousers were both black, but this will soon be sorted with a high visibility vest.<br />The boots I chose fitted well and again were good value for money with good protection. The down side to them is that they aren’t 100% waterproof, so I’ve got myself some 100% waterproof socks.<br />The gloves were Furygan lady gloves.
